ODV · online data validation

Every barcode, verified inline. as it prints.

Printronix AutoID printers include a built-in ODV scanner. Every barcode is checked for print contrast, edge definition, decode integrity and grade, in real time, as the label comes off the printer head.

If a barcode fails verification, the printer voids the label, flags the failure, and prints a replacement automatically. No separate verification station. No downstream rejects discovered three days later in a customer's DC.

Why it matters

A standard printer can't tell you it just printed a bad barcode. A Printronix AutoID printer won't let it leave the head.

The three failure modes that ODV eliminates, and what they typically cost in our clients' operations.

/ Cost 01 · Chargebacks
$$$

Customer DC chargebacks for unreadable barcodes.

Standard practice in major retail and 3PL DCs: any carton that can't be scanned at receiving is back-charged to the supplier. Per-carton fees plus handling. ODV catches it before it ships.

/ Cost 02 · Regulatory
! Risk

Failed regulatory audits.

TGA, GS1 conformance and export-market barcode requirements all specify minimum print-quality grades. A standard printer can't prove compliance. ODV produces grade data per label, retainable.

/ Cost 03 · Failed scans

Failed scans at retail POS.

One bad batch of GS1 codes in retail-pack format becomes a callout cost, a relabel cost and a lost-shelf cost. ODV stops the batch in the print queue.

Who needs Printronix ODV

Five operations where inline verification stops being optional.

If you've ever received a chargeback notice in the post, you're already in this list.

High-volume manufacturing.

Components and finished goods labelled at line speed. ODV verifies every print at production rate, without slowing the line.

Line-speed verification

Automotive parts distribution.

VDA, GS1 and OEM-specific barcode requirements. ODV produces retainable grade data per label for audit.

VDA · GS1 conformance

Pharmaceutical distribution.

TGA compliance and serialisation-adjacent applications. Inline ODV satisfies print-grade evidentiary requirements.

TGA · Serialisation-ready

Export compliance.

EU, US and Asian market barcode requirements vary, but minimum-grade specifications are universal. Per-label proof, on file.

Multi-market grade evidence
GS1 Sunrise 2027 · the natural fit

2D barcodes need higher print quality. ODV proves it. Every label.

By end-2027, every retail label needs a scannable 2D barcode at POS. DataMatrix or GS1 QR with Digital Link. 2D codes require substantially higher print quality than 1D codes to remain scannable at POS-grade speeds.

Printronix ODV verifies 2D code grade inline. That eliminates the need for a separate verification step in your line, and gives you a retainable audit trail for every label that ships.
