WiFi is an extremely effective method for accurately tracking assets, people and any other items as required in an indoor (including underground) environment. Outdoor tracking using WiFi is also an option for limited areas.

What is WiFi-ID?

By utilising a revolutionary 'merge' of technologies, WiFi-ID allows customers to utilise their existing WiFi (802.11) networks to provide location-specific RFID tag tracking, with constant positional updates, without the need to install proprietory RFID reader hardware (eg. reader gateways).

With WiFi-ID technology, the tag (whether it is on a person or item) is visible to you as long as it stays within the range of your WiFi network. With 'normal' RFID, the tag is only visible as it passes through a reader gateway or is within the range of a proprietory reader - no positional information on the tag is available.

The Ekahau Solution

In order to offer the best solution to our customers, Kirtech has partnered with Ekahau, who is the leader in WiFi location positioning software.

Ekahau is able to derive accurate and consistent location information even in areas where other technologies are prone to fail. Ekahau's software-based positioning and site survey technologies are based on over 10 years of research by one of the leading research groups in the world, the Complex Systems Computation Group at the University of Helsinki.

Importantly, with Ekahau's WiFi-based positioning system there is no interruption or disruption to existing operations, as installation rides over the existing WiFi infrastructure. Interestingly,Ekahau provides tracking using client software "soft tags" or battery powered WiFi tags to provide more cost effective solutions than other technologies. By relying on industry standard infrastructure, Ekahau is future-proof supporting 802.11 a/b/g today and new 802.11 variants in the future.
